    Ron,
It was a great chance to pick up techniques, see new products, meet old friends and make some new ones.
A tough day back at the office today (I did get in a LPT procedure this morning)
My presentation Saturday at ALD followed 2 past presidents, the certification coordinator, and was followed by the current president. Alot of heavy hitters.
There were only 3 or 4 mentions before my presentation of don’t make claims you can’t prove without the University studies, no one has ever proved laser bone generation, etc.etc.
    I presented a single case showing a PAP on #20 (non-vital) #19 8mm pockets on Distal (vital).
My contention was after Endo #20 belief is that new attachment and bone will fill in the defect at the apex. If I can achieve a similar closed system on #19 why can’t I get the same results? I can remove the diseased pocket lining, kill the bacteria, prevent bacterial re-migration, and using the PerioLase and LPT set a clot to close my pocket, then let the body heal itself.
Showed the case after LPT, 3 weeks, 3 months, 2 years. PAs before and at 2 years show no more PAP on #20, increased bone on D #18.
Then I WOWED them with the Millennium animation, finished reviewing the LPT on the diagrams. I faced the Questions. The cordinator(Rechman-U of Cal-SF) wanted to see the studies, told them they are on the way, come to the booth to see the histology. Later, when I saw him walk by the Booth,I confronted him and him and made him look at the post LPT bone histology.
    All went pretty well.
I think the weather is nicer here in Maryland (at least there is Sun).
What did you think of the ALD?

Sounds like an interesting day. I would have been stressed to the max getting up there like that. I’m not surprised things went well, I could tell talking to you ahead of time that you were prepared.
It would be great  to see that case. I know the histology Bob showed me was amazing (I actually could see what he was talking about and didn’t feel like I was looking at an ink blot test).
I just encoded the Millenium video for Real Player and added to my website.I think it’ll be a great addition. Millenium sure has done the work in supporting and training their dentists.
I’m glad the weather is better there-I came home to 16 degrees and windchill of zero.

Oh I feel so bad that I didnt get there this year. How many people came…….what were the best lectures . What did you like seeing there the most.

I wish I could have come and is it worth while to get the CDrom or DVD or whatever is produced of the whole meeting.

    Glenn–

We really missed you being there.

I enjoyed Jeff’s presentation, of course, but he really did an excellent job, dealt wiith the pressure well, deflected the barbs thrust at him, and he really did confront Peter and dragged him to see the histology.  Peter looked impressed after explaining the study.

Also, the lecture presentation on Polarized Optical Coerence Tomography (P-OCT) by Daniel Fried of UCSF was very interesting.  It uses a handpiece and light source to emitt near IR light to detect caries and loss of perio structures (eventually) with detailed resolution.  More precise than DIFOTI or Diagnodent.  It is technology in its infancy, but has a lot of promise.  Technology is licensed to Lantis Laser, a private company Craig Gimbel formed some years ago.

I spent a fair amount of time talking with Tom Haney about stuff.  We had some good talks.  He was re-elected manufacturer rep to the ALD board.  I tried out the HCB erbium.  Cuts well in all the right ways.  220 mj/p and 30 hz was interesting.  210 to 240 usec pulse duration, depending on setting.  Couldn’t find anyone at Biolase that knew the PD of the Waterlase.  I think it is 140 usec.  Tom thinks it is more like 100rock.gif

DEKA laser from Italy was new to the scene.  Pretty mock-up boxes, lots of claims, lots of boasting, no specifics, no FDA, evasive answers from sales rep Chris Justen.  Wouldn’t give details on laser parameters.  Showed mock-ups for Fr Nd:YAG, CO2, Er:YAG.  I’m not holding my breath.  He was off-putting to many.  Like Bryan Pope said, “He’s gonna come here to the US and learn us ignorant folk all ’bout lasers.”

It was amusing to see the YSGG and Opus Dent advocates present their different perspectives on endo research.  I let you fill in the missing pieces….I’ll fill you in when you come down to CDA.

    Bob:

The PD(pulse duration) on my Biolase Waterlase is listed as:

    140-150 microseconds.

Frequency is fixed at 20 Hz. Pulse energy up to 300 milliJoules.

Speaking of CDA(California Dental Association) in Anaheim April 24-27, I’m going and would like to personally meet the friends I’ve made on Ron’s Forum.

Who else is going to the Spring CDA Session?

Hi Allen: I will be there for the meeting working with Continuum (Hoya Con Bio and Global) make sure you come by and say hi

Bob , what an EXCELLENT synopsis. I can read between the lines. I think that certain laser companies are concerned alot about science and the ALD always has a loyal crew of followers for those lasers. It seems that the Millenium is falling into that fold.

On an aside , I am sorry I missed the ALD , but the buzz that was created by the scopes at the Pacific Dental Meeting here in Vancouver was fun to see.

Dr. Jeff Coil (head of endo at UBC) and myself did a lecture + hands on workshop and it went really well and created alot of interest. 2 years ago I had 4 people for the hands on . This year we had 34 I think.

The lecture had double the number of attendees and John Wests scope + endo course was sold out.

He had a full day lecture and he emphasized the role of the microscope and basically said you can do the things I am doing without one.

Great buzz at the booth and Vancouver being my home town and me working hard to legitimize the usage of the scope for ALL procedures it was heartwarming to see.

I missed meeting everyone but we will have a laugh or two at the CDA in April.

    Cya

    Thanks for the synopsis.

    Allen,

Thanks for confirming the Waterlase parameters.  Tom couldn’t believe me when I said 140.  I can understand why since the acoustical recoil is such a “crack”, and 300 mj/pulse is quite a punch too.

Glenn–Sounds like interest in scopes was OUTSTANDING.  Great to see the BUZZ is being created for scopes.  That’s great!

ALD says they wants to see science for claims, Jeff showed his bone regeneration case for endo and perio, anyone who wanted to see the histology was invited to come to the booth and see it.  Only a few did.  Seems the request for science was not so sincere, and not the reason for the reticence in accepting that bone is being regenerated along with PDL and new cementum.

Millennium is going to have a hospitality suite on Saturday night at the Anaheim Hilton, in the Coronado Room from 6-10 pm.  We’re in booth #2431 at the show.  Come on by either or both and let’s visit– drinks are on me at the hospitality suite–or anywhere we end up knocking down a few!

    Cheers!

Hi Allen I will make sure we get together and have a laugh or two ……you both have helped me grow more educated in lasers outside of my own and I hope that my posts have helped some understand the possibilities with my lasers.

    Howdy all!
My first post to this site. I was at the ALD and have been researching lasers for about 6 months now. I first started the laser search thinking that I was going to buy a hard tissue laser. But …. after as much learning as I felt I needed to make an informed decision I bought a Nd:YAG from Millennium and their excellent support staff of Bob Gregg, Del McCarthy, and Rusty. I believe they are the ONLY company that TEACHES their purchasers HOW to use their new lasers. I am looking forward to my training and the use of this great technology.

Jeff Cranska did a great presentation and anyone with an open mind at the ALD conferance would have had a lot of questions about this technique of laser periodontal therapy™ and its tremendous results.

The ALD conferance for me as a newbie was very good as I took the standard proficiency class and exam and was absorbing as much info as possible. I quickly learned that I had to sort through the bull_ _ _ _ .

Overall the conferance was well run and well attended. The best presentation I saw was at the hospitality suite hosted by Millennium Dental Technologies. Dr. Bob Gregg had a wonderful power point presentation on their Nd:YAG laser and some of their results. I keep absorbing like a sponge about lasers and THIS site is tremendous and a HUGE thank you to Ron Schalter for setting it up.

I hope to pay for my laser soon so I can start to branch out into other laser dentisry in my office. Thanks all for sharing your knowledge.

Hey Todd, you found the Board.
You’ll be happy with you decision to start w/ a Nd:YAG.
Perio will pay for the Laser, then you have the laser to do all the things daily to make dentistry easier and more predictable.
    Keep in touch.

    Hey Todd,

    Welcome to Ron’s forum!!

Thanks for the very kind words.

It was great to hang with you in Florida. Glad you made the decision to go forward with your PerioLase purchase. But I think you will find just how unbelievably valuable the PerioLase for LPT will be, the training you will get, the support, as well as all the other 101 things a pulsed Nd:YAG can do, including hard tissue stuff.

Thanks again and see you soon.

    Bob
