I’ve just returned from the Hoya Con Bio course at the Nash Institute. Being a laser novice, I signed up for both the standard certification course and the Advanced Techniques course which were being given consecutively.

The class began with an hour long talk by Robert Lowe, Ross Nash’s partner, on the use of lasers in cosmetic soft tissue surgery. He showed examples of both open and closed periodontal surgery with both the Erbium and Diode and how they enhanced his results in esthetic cases. This pretty much just whet our appetites as to what the laser could do.

Glenn Van As then took the podium for the Standard Proficiency Review. Glenn interjected clinical relevance into the laser physics and got into some entertaining banter with his lecturing partner, Don Wilson. After the clinical simulation and the exam, we took a break and the Advanced Techniques course began. This portion was organized by procedure. For each procedure, laser settings, tips and the clinical steps were given. The emphasis was mostly on the erbium, but the diode was also covered. The course ended with an interactive review by Glenn, reviewing each procedure again with the settings and tips used. I was thankful for the extensive manual. Having not done most of these procedures, I could see myself pulling out the manual for review as I am planning to do them.

I was very pleased by the quality and organization of the weekend. I’ve been kicking around in this profession for a more than a few years and am somewhat of a CE junkie. I have my fellowship in the AGD, have been through all of the Pankey & Dawson programs and have probably heard almost all of the big names in our profession. I would have to say Glenn Van As, who gave the bulk of the program, is up there. I was most impressed by the quality of his photography, which was among the best I’ve seen. The videos of the techniques done in his office were incredibly detailed, sharp and clear. In addition, he seemed extremely approachable and willing to share. As an example, at the end of the course, he announced that he would not be leaving until the following morning and would stay at the institute answering questions and talking lasers until they shut off the lights and locked the doors.

Wow what a weekend but what alot of fun. The Nash Insitute is a great honour for me to present at and the symposium was Sold Right Out at almost 40 users or potential users.

It is a pleasure to put faces to names and it was great to meet in person Jay Nelson and Don McNamara both of whom are active posters on Laser Dentistry Forum. It is really kind of people to step forward , and mention how they have followed posts on here and DT and learned from some of the things that we post here.

Jay and I had a great discussion talking about how wonderful LDF is for new users and how much can be learned here from this site. It really is a wonderful place for those passionate about lasers and I think that this term best describes both Jay and Don.

It is tough to create a course now that helps users get the most out of their lasers and its a daunting but tremendously rewarding position to be asked to help out. I thank Hoya for giving me that chance.

It was great to see my good friend Don Wilson this weekend and he has placed more laser assisted restorations than I will ever place and he is a wonderful mentor for me especially with respect to marketing and business principles.

Jay, I am slowly working on putting a DVD and workbook together which will have a cookbook of settings but as always there is a range of settings from most instructors so we try to ask participants to think about low, medium and high power with respect to the procedures. I often vary the settings according to how the patient is, how old they are , how inflamed the tissue is, what kind of sensitivity the patient has etc.

Finally, Jay I am trying to improve my presentation skills, photography, videography and method of teaching. Slowly, but surely I am improving and hopefully some of the influences of some of my friends and mentors is rubbing off. Its really quite easy to hide behind what the scope shows and I thank you for the kind remarks.

Finally, I hope that I always remain the type of person that helps out right to the end. If I am the first person in the door and the last person out to shut off the lights then I know that I have given as much as I can to the program. CE junkies like yourself deserve that and its one sure fire way for me to pick up a couple of pearls myself from people like yourself, Don, Don Wilson and my friend Wes Haddix who helped us out this weekend.

Finally, I want to publically thank the Nash Institute (Mark, Rob, and Bob in particular) , Hoya (Tom, Rich , Rick and Kimberly) and of course the fine folks at Sullivan Schein like Bart.

If I missed people forgive me because I just got back after 7 hours of flight and no sleep from the Rap parties that were being held in the hallway of the hotel and outside of my room for two nights in a row. Try lecturing when you only sleep a couple hours two nights in a row!!

All the best Jay, and again thanks for your friendship. Drop me a line if you find you need hints for a procedure and I will do my best to help you out.

Thank gosh I have a bit of a break now to work on some of the projects we have going …….7 cities in 7 weeks in 3 countries and many lectures was a bit of a rough spell there………

Its great friends like Jay and Don that make it all worth while……

    All the best

    Glenn,
Congrats on a wonderful course. It’s an honor to be your colleague in lasers! I am meeting up with Bob Lowe, next week at the Holliday Conference, you know we were classmates? They have a great place, and he is a wonderful teacher, and I am really glad you two have had a chance to meet and work together. Best wishes for future courses!!

    Hey Mark!
Tried to order your excavators that Glenn recommended in the course (and Dave Kimmel also strongly endorsed), but was unable to complete the check out process on the web site. It kept prompting me for a shipper even though I had already chosen the only option, UPS.  I’ll have my assistant call tomorrow.

Thanks Mark for your kind words. I phoned your office today because I spent some time on the phone yesterday getting Global folks involved with you for a scope to demo/buy.

If they contact you now then you know why. I phoned both the marketing rep and in addition your rep.

If you still dont hear from them in a few days give me a call. I would suggest that you send your CV to Global when you do talk to them!!

Email me if you need too……..

    Talk to you later.

Hey Dave……..I completely forgot the conversation we had with respect to the posting of the pictures. It was a pleasure meeting you at the meeting and I hope that you are able to come to the full session in March for the advanced course.

The pics you posted of the eruption cyst were excellent and I hope that the meeting was good for you . Congrats on passing the written and clinical simulation for the standard proficiency and hopefully we will have a chance to meet again for the advanced portion early next year.

Cya and I forget if you are using the scope now.

    Let me know

By the way folks…….I am not trying to sound too commercial. For anyone who has a scope and wants to cut down the learning curve here is some information on the DVD

    Cya and thanks

    Glenn

Thanks for your interest on the DVD and great to hear that you are
    getting into microscopy.

Here is some information on the DVD that I sent someone else this morning
and hope this helps you with respect to what is contained in it.

I have been using the microscope with lasers for around 7 years now and have
done quite a bit of lecturing and publishing articles on the scope. I am
the President of the Academy of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry group
(AMED) which can be located online at <a href="http://www.microscopedentistry.com

    In” target=”_blank”>http://www.microscopedentistry.com

In my travels I have noticed that many people who were new to microscopy had
trouble like I did with the learning curve and wanted some tips on how I
viewed certain teeth, how I saw around the back of the handpiece, how I set
up monitors in the operatory, and a variety of other questions so we decided
a year ago to make a DVD. After 9 months of discussing it, filming it and
spending far too much money on it , we finally got it finished in November of 2003.

The DVD that I have finished producing is around 90 mins long and deals with
quite a few things including positioning and how to view each sextant of the
mouth using both a direct and indirect view. It also covers some clinical
tips to lessen the learning curve. Included with the DVD is a 40 page book
that has 3 lectures of mine covering the same material and the powerpoint
slides are printed out for people to view.

The cost is 199.00 USD plus shipping and the shipping costs vary from 10-50
dollars depending on how you ship it and where you live. My dental
assistant Lori is taking care of things and she can tell you how much the
    shipping will be.

I can be reached with a credit card number at work (talk to Lori) at 604 985
    1232 (phone), 604 985 1732 (fax) or by email glennvanas@shaw.ca

I do live in Canada so I am not 100% sure of the international number for
    the phones.

We accept Mastercard or Visa but unfortunately none of the others that
exist, or I can accept a US money order. We typically transfer the amount
into Canadian funds (Exchange is that one Canadian dollar is around 83-84
    cents US) .

Thanks again and let me know if you want a DVD and I will get it out to you.
If you do want to order one , please give me your address to send it too.
