How would all of you handle this? I spoke today to a Dr. Lawney, who is the person to speak to about licensing and legalities in the state of New York…I asked him about the use of lasers by hygienists in the state of New York…His runaround answer was the following: In New York a hygienist can use anything that they are properly trained to use within the scope of what is permitted and acceptable within their lecensure. When i asked him about approval of laser use in NY, his answer was, we dont approve devices meaning, they dont approve, cavitrons, prophy jets etc…As long as it is within the scope of dental hygiene it is permitted and if a complaint were to arise they would evaluate the situation on a case by case basis….
That being said…Would u allow a hygienist is NY to use a Diode or an Erbium laser to Pocket disnfect/calculus removal etc….and would u feel comfortable if a legal situation would arise?

There is a huge problem however-there is no “proper training.”

Arizona currently allows hygienists to perform within the scope of their licensure and allows hygienists to use lasers to do this. There is currently some discussion as to what proper training is required to allow this. The Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency that oversees x-rays already has a regulation that few know of that states that anyone using a laser be properly trained and has a minimum hour training requirement. So far not much has been done with this that I know of but the State Board is reviewing recommendations and will probably adopt a similar stance. Luckily, Bob and Del trained my hygienist on the Periolase when I was trained and she has standard proficiency, which is more than the current requirements. As to all the docs and hygienists that have purchased various brands without getting certified- who knows?

    Bruce,

You may have a number of incorrect assumptions. If you’re in NV on Friday, I’ll track you down. I’d like to meet you.

If I were to get involved with LASER treatment of periodontitis, it would only be a doctor-applied procedure along the lines of what McCarthy and Gregg promote with their Nd:YAG.

This is simply a personal opinion based on what I have studied and experienced over the last four years.
